The crucial role of innate and adaptive immunity in the management of HPV infections

Innate and adaptive immunity are the body’s two primary defense systems, consisting of biochemical and cellular mechanisms that prevent and combat harmful agents. A compromised immune system facilitates the development of cutaneous viral infections, such as warts, which are primarily caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Common warts are benign epidermal lesions that typically occur in areas prone to micro-trauma, whereas genital warts—or condylomata—carry the potential for malignant transformation. Immune system dysfunction—triggered by factors such as stress, nutritional imbalances, chronic medical conditions, or the use of immunosuppressive drugs—is a critical factor in susceptibility to HPV infection and the persistence of lesions. In the absence of an effective immune response, warts may become recurrent or resistant to standard treatments, including cryotherapy, electrocautery, and topical therapies.

Optimizing the immune response through immunostimulation is therefore essential. Micronutrients such as methionine, zinc, vitamin B6, magnesium, manganese, and iron play vital roles in modulating immune function; they promote the proliferation and activation of immunocompetent cells, facilitate the synthesis of cytokines, and assist in the neutralization of free radicals.

Consequently, an integrated therapeutic approach—combining local treatments with the strengthening of immune defenses through appropriate nutritional support—is a strategic necessity for the effective management of HPV infections and the prevention of recurrence.
