Sport and wellness… but watch out for athlete’s foot!

As is well known, sports are essential for maintaining optimal health. Regardless of the type chosen or the frequency with which one participates, staying active helps keep the body in shape, providing vigor and releasing energy—and that’s not all!

Physical activity also fosters psychological well-being, helping to alleviate the stress and worries of daily life. Furthermore, for both children and adults, sports serve as a powerful medium for conveying important values such as teamwork, solidarity, and respect. They teach us how to handle both victories and defeats—and, perhaps, even inspire a bit of healthy ambition in the pursuit of our goals—lessons that are easily applied to other areas of our everyday lives. Yet, alongside the numerous physical and psychological benefits that physical activity offers, there are also potential pitfalls to be aware of—especially when sharing equipment or common spaces with others. In fact, most people have likely heard of "athlete’s foot"—a very common condition, particularly among those who play sports, and one that is, unfortunately, also highly contagious.

As the name suggests, this is a specific type of dermatitis that commonly affects individuals who frequent hot, humid, and crowded environments—such as gyms, swimming pools, saunas, or, more generally, locker rooms equipped with showers. It is caused by a group of fungi that thrive in warm, damp conditions and specifically target the skin of the feet; in more severe cases, the infection can even spread to the nails and hands.

More common in adults—particularly men—it manifests as areas of redness and scaling on the soles of the feet or between the toes (usually between the third and fourth toes). These areas gradually become itchy and may sometimes be accompanied by a burning sensation. While these symptoms make the condition quite uncomfortable, it is fortunately not dangerous to one’s overall health. This is why taking good care of your feet—along with simple measures like wearing breathable footwear, using appropriate shower sandals in locker rooms or public showers, and employing antifungal products—serves as an effective way to prevent and combat this type of infection, while also ensuring your feet remain healthy and attractive.
