“Keeping an eye on” well-being: taking care of your eyesight every day
Our vision is with us at every moment of the day. Reading, working, driving, and using smartphones or computers are daily activities that place constant demands on our eyes. That is why, amidst the hustle and bustle of everyday life, taking a few simple steps to care for our eye health can make a real difference.
Good eye health begins with good habits
To consistently look after the well-being of your vision, it is helpful to adopt a few simple precautions:
- Take breaks: when spending many hours in front of a monitor, it is advisable to pause your activity periodically and shift your gaze toward a more distant point. This simple habit helps break up prolonged close-range viewing and allows your eyes to adjust their focus to different distances.
- Ensure proper lighting: an environment that is too dark—or, conversely, one with excessive glare—can make reading or working in front of a screen uncomfortable. It is therefore recommended to set up your workspace with adequate lighting, avoiding direct reflections on the monitor whenever possible.
- Protect your eyes from the sun: our eyes are exposed to sunlight every day. On particularly bright days, it is important to take appropriate precautions and wear high-quality sunglasses that provide proper UV protection.
- Prevention includes regular check-ups: if you notice changes in your vision, persistent discomfort, pain, redness, or other eye-related symptoms, it is important to consult your doctor or an eye care professional. Periodic check-ups allow for the long-term monitoring of eye health and the timely detection of any changes.
- Maintain a balanced diet: a healthy, balanced lifestyle is the foundation of overall well-being. A varied diet ensures the intake of essential nutrients found naturally in food. These include the bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), which supports microcirculation and eye health, while also providing antioxidant benefits.
In certain situations, it may also be useful to turn to dietary supplements. Substances used in formulations designed for eye health include not only bilberry extract, but also components such as blackcurrant, rutin, and zeaxanthin.
There are, therefore, many ways we can look after the well-being of our eyes—starting with simple actions and conscious choices. Because taking care of our vision also means taking care of everything that we can see, discover, and experience through our gaze.

The bilberry as you’ve never known it: from the Middle Ages to modern science
The taxonomic name of the bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, derives from the Latin bacca—a term denoting any roundish fruit—and myrtillus, which literally means "little myrtle," likely in reference to the resemblance between the leaves and fruits of the two plants.
